Registration is open for Field Inclusive’s Social Field Safety Workshop: “Social Field Safety: Understanding Risks for Marginalized and Historically Excluded Individuals who Professionally Work Outdoors.” Murry Burgess (CEO) and Lauren D. Pharr (CFO), founders of Field Inclusive Inc. and advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) will host the interactive workshop designed for current individuals of government, NGO, business, and academic entities engaged in natural science and environmental activities who would like to learn more about creating safe and inclusive fieldwork and outdoor experiences.

“Currently we are offering this workshop for organizations and universities, and at in-person conferences,” Pharr says. “However, we wanted to be able to offer the workshop periodically throughout the year for individuals who would like to to learn ways to be more inclusive.”

The online workshop will be held on April 27th from 1-3PM ET. ““Social Field Safety: Understanding Risks for Marginalized and Historically Excluded Individuals who Professionally Work Outdoors ” will involve group conversations and discussions about various real – life social field safety scenarios as well as interactive activities put together by the FI Team. The goal of these discussions will be to bring awareness to the common things that could happen to workers in the field, and more specifically, the extra layer of safety that needs to be created for minorities. Participants should expect to attend the full 2-hr workshop.

Cost is Free for FI Members, and $10 for non-members. Enrollment is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

This workshop is also certified by The Wildlife Society to count towards their Certified Wildlife Biologist® Professional Development Certificate Program. Participants can earn up to 1.5 CEUs in Category I of the Certified Wildlife Biologist® Professional Development Certificate Program.

Participants who have previously taken this workshop at a conference or through their university have noted a variety of benefits.

“The workshop provided a good conversation starter and initial learnings. I do hope folks can take more time to learn and reflect on these issues” reported one attendee.

“I love the workshop overall. It really helped me understand field safety better. I always thought I am well prepared and field situation[s] may not be too complicated. This workshop proved me wrong. It is always easier to escalate a situation that to de-escalate. It is a skill to have!”

“It was an amazing, well-organized activity,” added another. “It really helped get the conversations going to brainstorm solutions.”

Burgess says field safety plays an integral role in making sure field researchers and those who recreate outdoors are safe, and in particular, being a marginalized and historically excluded individual adds an extra barrier that needs to be amplified and discussed more.

“This workshop brings real life social field scenarios and information to the table in an approachable and applicable manner for anyone who wants to expand their own role on this topics,” says Burgess.
